Cal City begins holiday time with tree lighting This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Thursday, November 29, 2007. By ALLISON GATLIN - Valley Press Staff Writer CALIFORNIA CITY - The holiday season begins in earnest Saturday as the Community Club and city Parks and Recreation department play host to the annual Christmas tree-lighting at City Hall. "That's the beginning of the holiday season for California City," said Community Club President and Councilman Mike Edmiston of the tree-lighting. The tree, outside City Hall on the corner of Hacienda and California City Boulevard, will be alight each evening from sundown to roughly 11 p.m. through New Year's Day. The kickoff festivities begin at 5 p.m. Saturday and will include holiday-themed entertainment from the California City Middle and Elementary school bands and choirs, carolers from the Solid Rock Church, singer Maria Dyson and the members of California City's royal court. Mayor David Evans, joined by the California City royal court, officially will light the decorated tree. Santa Claus also will be on hand to visit and take photos with children. The Girl Scouts will sell hot cocoa and cookies to those in attendance at the hour-long ceremony. Visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs for seating in the grassy area surrounding the tree and in front of the performance stage. The now-annual event began about five years ago, Edmiston said, with a living pine tree about 4 or 5 feet tall. That tree has grown to become an impressive backdrop for the lights and ornaments. Area schoolchildren have been invited to create ornaments to decorate the tree, which will be accomplished Friday by Community Club members, assisted by city personnel, Edmiston said. The California City Community Club is a local philanthropic organization that began before the city was incorporated. "The club itself has a long history in the community," Edmiston said. In addition to the annual tree-lighting, the club also sponsors the Little Miss California City pageant.
